Inverness-shire

Your perfect base for a Highland visit

The county of Inverness-shire stretches from the Atlantic coast to the North Sea and within it, contains the best that Scotland has to offer. You can travel down the Great Glen, carved from the rock by glaciers thousands of years ago, check out the outdoor pursuits and of course, have a look for Nessie in Loch Ness, right in the heart of the county.

Also part of the county is the Isle of Skye, now easy to reach since a bridge was built over the sea to the island a few years ago. On the way through to Skye, you can also plot the trail that the fugitive Bonnie Prince Charlie took to escape his enemies, the British Government, after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden – there’s even a memorial on the way to a man who sacrificed his own life so that his leader could escape.

You can also visit the eerie battlefield site where he lost the chance to regain the British throne in April 1746. Now also made famous by the Outlander series of books and the related TV series, the battlefield and the nearby Clava Cairns give you a real chance to see what Inverness-shire has to offer. There are also lots of outdoor pursuits in the county – and we’re not just talking about Nessie hunting!

Try some dolphin watching, some ornithology or even try your hand on some of the best mountain biking trails in the world. At the same time, let us take you off the beaten path and enjoy the little known sights that abound in Inverness-shire and then let us take you to a local hotel to rest up and enjoy the local hospitality and culture. Inverness-shire really is the heart of the Highlands and has a little of everything that Scotland has to offer – just make sure you make time to stay over when you’re here.
