Loch Ness and Highlands

Central to the Scottish Highlands is the world famous Loch Ness. By taking in the Loch, and looking for its legendary resident the Loch Ness Monster, you’re already most of the way to seeing the true heart of Scotland- and you’re not that far away from the Scottish islands either.

Take the well travelled road along Loch Ness, visiting castle and the best monster locations leading you to the rest of the Great Glen, a geological fault line which goes all the way from Norway to Canada and splits Scotland in two. A world heritage site applicant, the glen has magnificent mountains guarding each side and gives the option to sail from the North Sea to the Atlantic Ocean along the 200 year old Caledonian Canal – including a spot of water borne monster hunting on the way.

Out to the west of the Great Glen is the valley of Glen Coe, haunted to this day by a brutal clan massacre in that took place in 1692 and to the east is the Cairngorms National Park, home to the best that Scotland’s adventure tourism industry can offer. On the way there is the town of Fort William, right next door to Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK. Such are the adventure tourism opportunities at Fort William, it has become known as the outdoor capital of the UK.  A little north is the must visit Isle of Skye, now most famous as one of the top Hollywood filming locations on the planet but it’s the hidden gems that you might just pass by that are worth stopping for. These include the romantic Glen Affric, the Stratherrick Valley and the 300 year old Wades roads network – now mainly footpaths with spectacular views.
